The town was incorporated in 1952 and consists of 6.9 square miles of total area.

Elberta is home to a variety of interesting attractions and sites to see. The Baldwin County Heritage Museum is found in this community, and it features exhibits explaining the development of the county. It also includes a large amount of old artifacts regarding farm homes and farm equipment. Visitors who are interested in farming may also enjoy a trip to the Sweet Home Cheese Farm, which produces more than 15 types of aged cheeses without growth hormones, colorings, or preservatives. Other notable attractions in Elberta include Soldiers Creek Golf Club and the Lake Osprey RV Country Club., and each year, this community hosts the Elberta German Sausage Festival which draws over 40,000 visitors.

The climate of Elberta is typical of a humid subtropical zone. Winters tend to be quite mild, attracting snowbirds to the area from colder, northern climates. During the coldest months of the year, average highs still tend to reach the upper 50s, although overnight lows can fall to the freezing point. A home heat pump or furnace system should be installed and properly serviced to make sure that residents stay warm during these cool conditions.

Summers in Elberta are hot with high humidity. While average highs can reach the 90s, the muggy Gulf Coast weather will make it feel even warmer, so a central air conditioning unit at home can be a real asset. Additionally, these systems can improve indoor air quality, benefiting people who suffer from asthma and allergies.
